Lenny Brewer
Lenny Brewer, a resident of Elmont since 1974, died of cancer May 22nd, 2004 at age 60. He left behind tow loving sons, Roy and Brian, a dedicated daughter-in-law, Tara, and his pride and joy granddaughter, Ashley Marie. Lenny's wife, Marie, died nine years ago. He spent his last days in teh Boston area with Brian, Tara and Ashley.
Almost immediately after buying his home on Albany Street in Elmont, Lenny joined the ranks of coaches in the Elmont Little League and remained an active member, coaching, working on the board or serving as an officer for almost thirty years. He stressed baseball skills, team spirit and sportsmanship. He was always soft spoken- when you could understand him with that trademark cigar in his mouth- but his players always had respect for him.
Lenny joined the St. Boniface CYO about 25 years ago, coaching boys' basketball when Roy and Brian started to play. He coached steadily thereafter. Nothing could dissuade him from his love of sports and children. In spite of the closing of the St. Boniface CYO program two years ago and his own battle with cancer, Lenny began coaching in teh St. Vincent de Paul CYO program in Elmont. The girls on his last team from St. Vincent visited him in the hospital shortly before he moved to Boston to bring him a tournament trphy they won for him. A month later they came to the wake to pay their last respects- a testimony to the impact this gentle, caring man had on the youth he so enjoyed coaching.
He was knowledgeable in his sports, loving in his spirit, and tireless in his effort. His players always respected him and many times mirrored his qualities. Unlike so many of the sports figures our youth admire today, Lenny Brewer did it without pomp and spectacle and never disappointed the youth or their families. "He was an inspiration to our entire coaching staff," said St. Vincent's CYO Coordinator Fred Cuttita. "His dedication to the youngsters was amazing. He was always be there, no matter how sick he was, he wanted to be with the team."
Lenny was more than a coach. He was a devoted father and a loving and dedicated husband. Lenny never neglected his family, especially the wife he loved so much. Msgr. T. Peter Ryan, the former pastor of St. Boniface, recalled, although he was not Catholic, you would find Lenny faithfully by the side of Marie at St. Boniface every Saturday at teh 5 o'clock Mass after a baseball game or Sunday morning before Lenny left for a basketball game. When Marie was struck with cancer, Lenny cared for her at home and still found time and energy for the youth and sports he loved so much.
The world may not notice the passing of Lenny Brewer but we who knew him and loved him will never forget him. -Nocerino
